Beautiful, Kate. I especially loved the embroidery (which managed to clear from my mind the image of Gerry Adams naked on the trampoline).

I have never used the word hobby and when asked what my hobbies are, I am always stumped for an answer.

You reminded me of being asked what my hobbies were when I was a child. I never knew what to say, and always felt I was a disappointment, since I did not have a full chemistry set bubbling away in my bedroom, indicating genius status!

This was a delightful read, Kate. What talent you have at embroidery and I find the tradition of embroidering the names of the babes on the tree on the christening gown very tender and special. And the statue of Queen Victoria in front of Kensington Palace was created by her daughter, Louise? Did she sculpt it? My favorite park in all the world is Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens and I always say hello to the Queen when I pass by.

I am so glad that you say hello to Queen Victoria. I always think she looks a little lonely. Yes, her daughter did sculpt it, in her studio at Kensington Palace. Though she may have had more than a little help from her tutor!

Fascinating information! I love learning this. Perhaps now when I pass by I'll say hello to both Queen Victoria AND Louise!

Embroidery work is a great hobby because it lasts so long and is treasured by family! I took up watercolor during the pandemic and just this year I made a little book with some of my favorites and I wrote about how it felt to be creative during such a time of uncertainty.

Genealogy and writing are my other favorite hobbies. 😀

It's always a pleasure learning the etymology of a word, so thank you for that, Kate.

The embroidery is just beautiful. I did some shewing as a child but never learned more than the basics and now even that is lost to me. And I never really thought of my hobbies as I always struggled with finding out a job to like. I'm learning lately to stop searching and just do whatever feels good. Who knows, maybe something will come up.

I loved this. I never knew that about Tom Hanks either! Beautiful embroidery that you have made. I think that you are right too a hobby really does reflect a person and I never thought that collecting things was a hobby, you’ve convinced me. Great piece.

That embroidery is gorgeous. Your grandmother must have treasured it. My main hobby is writing. Also lifting weights, gardening, hiking. I don't know if these really fit as hobbies, but that's how I spend my free time.

Thank you, my grandmother loved the embroidery. She also sewed, and I have beautiful embroidered tablecloths made by her. I think anything you do for pleasure is a hobby - and your hobbies also keep you fit!

I love the idea of a book of your watercolours along with your stories from that time. Imagine coming across that wee book in 200 years - how wonderful that would be!
