In Guayaquil, Ecuador, people create effigies of the old year (usually some politician) and then burn them as the year ends. My favourite part was leaping over the bonfire...

Thank you - it is so interesting to hear about traditions in different countries. Fire is a very common component. In the UK we burn an effigy at Guy Fawkes Night, also often of a politician. Leaping over the bonfire sounds a little dangerous!
